TIFF Faces New Horizon as Bell Steps Back from Three-Decade Sponsorship

By Dennis Mutua,

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), one of the world’s most prominent film events, is poised to undergo a significant transformation as its lead sponsor Bell Inc. (TSE: BCE) announced its decision to step away after nearly three decades of partnership.

Bell has been a festival partner since 1995 and has its name on TIFF’s downtown headquarters, located in the heart of the entertainment district on King Street West.

This development comes as the organizers and film lovers brace for a reduced celebrity presence in next month’s festival due to ongoing Hollywood strikes.

Bell spokesperson Ellen Murphy, says the naming rights end when the sponsorship expires at the end of December further adding that the telecommunications provider opted not to renew the contract.

During last year’s festival, sponsors contributed to the tune of about $13.4 million which amounted to 28% of its total revenue. This year’s 11-day movie marathon starts in September 7 with long awaited animated feature film ‘The Boy and the Heron.’

TIFF communications vice president Judy Lung, acknowledged that the 28-year partnership has contributed to the festival’s growth and success.

Earlier this year, we mutually agreed that this partnership would come to a close at the end of 2023. We extend our sincere gratitude to Bell for their unwavering support, dedication and collaborative spirit and look forward to working with them in new ways,” said Lung.

On the other side, Bell expressed its gratitude to having been part of the annual festival which attracts top films and talent from across the world.

Earlier this year, we decided that the end of 2023 would be the right time to step back from our partnership with TIFF and opted not to renew our sponsorship in order to invest in other opportunities that are core to our business,” said Bell.
